Mushroom therapy (psilocybin / psilocin)

Psilocybin-assisted therapeutic approach — strictly regulated by law in Canada. Informational and educational fact-sheet only.

Psychedelic medicine (research)Strict legal framework

Important legal warning

In Canada, psilocybin and psilocin are controlled substances (Schedule III of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act). Their possession, production, sale or administration is ILLEGAL, except within frameworks authorized by Health Canada: approved clinical trials, the Special Access Program (SAP), or individual exemptions under section 56. This fact-sheet is purely informational. Horizon Soins does not connect anyone to illegal services and in no way encourages use outside the legal framework. Be wary of anyone offering this outside authorized medical supervision: it is illegal and potentially dangerous. For any step, speak to your doctor first.

Origin and history

Mushrooms containing psilocybin have been used for millennia in certain ceremonial traditions of Central America. Modern scientific research has seen a renaissance since the 2000s (Johns Hopkins, Imperial College London) on psilocybin in supervised clinical settings, for treatment-resistant depression and end-of-life distress. In Canada, this interest led to clinical trials and Health Canada-regulated authorizations — never to general legalization.

Principles and foundations

Within authorized frameworks, psilocybin-assisted therapy combines a substance administered under medical supervision with psychotherapeutic support (preparation, supervised session, integration). The emphasis is on set and setting and on subsequent integration. It is never a solitary intake nor an over-the-counter product.

Typical session flow

Only within an authorized legal framework (clinical trial or special access): preparation sessions with a clinician, a dosing day supervised by trained professionals in a safe medical environment, then integration sessions. Medical monitoring is continuous. No practitioner can legally offer this outside these frameworks.

Main indications

Studied mainly for treatment-resistant depression and existential distress in palliative care. These uses remain experimental and accessible only via Health Canada-authorized programs — not as a mainstream wellness service.

Contraindications and precautions

Personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder; certain cardiovascular conditions; interactions with several medications (notably SSRI/MAOI antidepressants, lithium). Use outside a medical framework carries serious psychological and physical risks. Never stop a prescribed treatment without medical advice.

State of research

Research is promising but still preliminary. In Canada, legal access is through: (1) approved clinical trials, (2) the Special Access Program for serious cases when usual treatments have failed, (3) individual section 56 exemptions granted case by case. These routes require medical supervision and official authorization.

How to choose a practitioner

There is NO private practitioner who can legally offer this care in Canada outside the frameworks above. If you face a serious condition, speak to your doctor, who can assess a Special Access Program request or refer you to a recognized clinical trial. Avoid any paid private ceremony or retreat promising these substances: illegal, unsafe, and without recourse.
