Origin and history
Tantra is a spiritual tradition from Kashmiri Shivaism (India, 6th-12th century), branch of Indian tantrism. It considers the body, emotions and sexuality as sacred paths to awakening, contrary to ascetic ways. Western "neo-tantra" (since 1960-70s, Osho, Margot Anand) is a modern adaptation often simplified, sometimes far from traditional sources.
Principles and foundations
Tantra posits that sacred energy (shakti) can be awakened and channeled through all aspects of life — including sexuality, considered ritual and meditative. Practices: specific meditations, mudras, mantras, breathings, consciousness rituals, conscious exploration of intimacy (in couple or alone).
Typical session flow
Very varied formats: weekend workshops, residential retreats (3 to 10 days), individual sessions. Practices clothed in the vast majority of cases — vigilance toward "tantra-massages" that trivialize or commercialize the sacred dimension. Authentic practice is slow, meditative, deeply respectful.
Main indications
Spiritual search, transformation of emotional and sexual blockages, body-mind integration, support of couples seeking to deepen their conscious intimacy, deep centering.
Contraindications and precautions
ABSOLUTELY AVOID "tantric" practices involving rapid sexual contact, requiring immediate nudity, pressuring performance, trivializing limits. Authentic tantra deeply respects consent. For sexual trauma: practice only with a practitioner trained in trauma-sensitive tantra.
State of research
No scientific research on spiritual tantra specifically. Some studies on meditation and heart coherence show beneficial effects compatible with certain tantric practices.
How to choose a practitioner
MAXIMUM CAUTION. Prefer recognized schools with verifiable traditional lineage. Flee practitioners who mix tantra and sexual services. Verify feedback from former students. Typical fees: $60 to $150 per session, $300 to $800 for a weekend.
