Sonic healing

Specific vibrational frequencies (432 Hz, 528 Hz, etc.) for rebalancing.

Modern vibrationalDebated approach

Origin and history

Modern sonic healing is a branch of sound therapy focused on precise frequencies — notably the "solfeggio frequencies" (174, 285, 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852 Hz) popularized by Joseph Puleo in the 1970s, and tuning to 432 Hz as an alternative to standard 440 Hz. Widely disseminated in the New Age community since the 2000s.

Principles and foundations

According to these approaches, certain precise frequencies would have specific effects on the body and consciousness: 528 Hz would "repair DNA", 432 Hz would be "the frequency of nature", etc. The practitioner uses calibrated tuning forks, tuned crystal bowls, electronically generated music, or voice with specific mantras.

Typical session flow

45 to 75 minutes. Lying clothed. The practitioner applies precise instruments on or around the body, sometimes touching the skin directly (tuning forks on meridians). You also listen to targeted compositions in quality headphones.

Main indications

Deep relaxation, meditative support, emotional release, search for intense vibrational experiences, support during spiritual practices.

Contraindications and precautions

Pacemakers (vibrations), photosensitive epilepsy (some frequencies), acute hearing disorders, first trimester pregnancy for very intense sounds.

State of research

Scientific evidence on specific frequencies (528 Hz, 432 Hz) is very limited and largely refuted by the musicological and neuroscientific community. The felt benefits likely come from soothing music and placebo effect. General sound therapy (all frequencies) is better documented.

How to choose a practitioner

Beware of spectacular promises ("DNA repair", "cellular healing"). Prefer practitioners trained in music therapy + certified sound therapy. Typical fees: $70 to $130 per session.
