Origin and history
The therapeutic use of crystals and minerals dates back to Antiquity (Egypt, Ayurvedic medicine, medieval lapidaries). Modern crystal healing became popular in the 1970s in the wake of the New Age movement. It is one of the most accessible and popular energy approaches, but also among the most scientifically controversial.
Principles and foundations
According to these approaches, each crystal would possess a specific vibration capable of interacting with the energy fields of the human body. Stones are chosen based on their correspondence with chakras, energy needs, or intentions. Direct application on the body, in a bath, in meditation, or simply worn as jewelry.
Typical session flow
A session lasts 45 to 90 minutes. The practitioner assesses your energy state, selects corresponding stones (often in correspondence with the 7 chakras). You lie down while they place them on or around your body. The session often ends with a sharing of sensations and home use advice.
Main indications
Search for well-being, personal centering, emotional support, life transitions, intention of support during trials. To be considered as spiritual accompaniment or personal ritual, not as therapy.
Contraindications and precautions
No physical contraindication. But: NEVER use as a substitute for medical treatment. Promises to cure serious pathologies by crystals are absolutely false. Beware of stone "elixirs" in drinking water (some stones are toxic by prolonged contact: malachite, pyrite, lapis lazuli).
State of research
Scientific research does not support the energy properties attributed to crystals. The benefits felt are attributed to the placebo effect, the quality of attention of the practitioner, and the symbolic/meditative dimension of the practice — which does not make them illegitimate as a personal ritual.
How to choose a practitioner
Prefer practitioners transparent about the scientific limits of the practice, who do not promise to cure diseases. Crystal healing is more relevant as a personal ritual or meditation than as therapy. Typical fees: $60 to $120 per session.
