Origin and history
Smudging is an ancestral practice present in many Indigenous peoples of America (Sioux, Lakota, Navajo, Cherokee), where burned white sage is considered purifying. Similar practices: palo santo in South America, incense in Asia, common sage in Europe ("fumigation"). Modern Western popularization raises questions of cultural appropriation and sustainability (overconsumption threatening wild sage).
Principles and foundations
The smoke from burned sacred herbs would "cleanse" negative energies accumulated in a place, on a person, or an object. Beyond the symbolic, some plants (sage, rosemary) have antimicrobial properties documented by fumigations.
Typical session flow
15 to 30 minutes. The practitioner (or yourself after training) burns a sage bundle or palo santo stick, directs the smoke with a feather or hand toward the person or rooms, possibly reciting intentions or prayers. Ventilation of the room afterwards.
Main indications
Energy cleansing after a difficult period, move, conflict, grief, illness, or simply as a regular centering ritual. Preparation for a meditation or ceremony.
Contraindications and precautions
Avoid in case of asthma, allergy to burned plants, pregnancy (smoke), young children, sensitive animals. Smoke contains fine particles — ventilate after.
State of research
Some studies show antimicrobial properties of sage fumigations (reduction of bacteria in air). The specific "energetic" effect is symbolic and ritual — not scientific but culturally valid.
How to choose a practitioner
For self-practice: buy sage and palo santo from sustainable cultures (no wild harvesting), respect Indigenous traditions. For a practitioner-led ceremony: typical fees $50 to $150.
