Origin and history
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) was developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s, based on Roger Callahan's TFT (Thought Field Therapy). These approaches combine cognitive psychotherapy and stimulation by tapping acupressure points. They are part of the modern "energy psychology" movement, in full expansion.
Principles and foundations
According to these approaches, blocked emotions correspond to disturbances in the body's energy system. By gently tapping specific acupressure points while verbally formulating the problem, the cognitive and energetic blockage would be released simultaneously. The practitioner guides the sequence, you tap yourself.
Typical session flow
A session lasts 60 to 90 minutes. The practitioner first helps you identify the blocking emotion or memory. They then guide you through the tapping sequence on the points (top of the head, eyebrow, under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone, under the arm), while repeating personalized phrases. Several rounds until measurable decrease in emotional intensity.
Main indications
Anxiety, phobias, minor trauma, emotional blockages, stress management, anxiety-related sleep disorders, grief, pain management. For complex trauma or PTSD: only with a therapist trained in clinical EFT + psychotherapy.
Contraindications and precautions
For heavy trauma, dissociation, psychotic disorders: to be avoided in self-practice, to be practiced only with a clinical psychologist or psychotherapist trained in EFT. Recreational or YouTube-learned use can reactivate memories without adequate framework.
State of research
Clinical EFT benefits from growing research: controlled studies showing effectiveness for anxiety, PTSD, certain phobias, post-traumatic stress syndrome in veterans. Evidence remains debated but has accumulated since 2010.
How to choose a practitioner
Prefer psychologists or psychotherapists trained in EFT (EFT International or ACEP certifications). Avoid practitioners without basic psychological training if dealing with trauma. Typical fees: $90 to $150 per session.
