Origin and history
NLP was created in the 1970s by Richard Bandler (mathematician) and John Grinder (linguist) in the United States. They modeled the techniques of three exceptional therapists (Milton Erickson, Virginia Satir, Fritz Perls) to extract reproducible tools. It is more a toolbox than a unified therapy.
Principles and foundations
NLP posits that our experience of the world is structured by our sensory channels (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and our language. By voluntarily reprogramming these structures (via anchors, reframings, metaphors, dissociations), one can quickly transform limiting patterns.
Typical session flow
60 to 90 minutes. The practitioner first identifies your precise goal (positively formulated, measurable). They then use structured techniques: resource anchoring, 6-step reframing, submodality technique, timeline, etc. Often a few sessions are enough for a targeted goal.
Main indications
Phobias (documented effectiveness), specific blockages (public speaking, exams), stress management, performance coaching, exit from repetitive patterns, communication improvement.
Contraindications and precautions
For deep trauma, severe depression, dissociative disorders: to be practiced only with a clinical psychologist or psychotherapist trained in NLP. Avoid "NLP coaches" without psychological training for sensitive topics.
State of research
Some clinical studies (phobias, performance anxiety) show effectiveness, but NLP as a whole lacks robust scientific validation. The most solid techniques are those inherited from Ericksonian hypnosis.
How to choose a practitioner
Prefer Practitioners, Master Practitioners or Teachers certified by a recognized school (NLP Society, official Richard Bandler). For deep topics: psychologists or psychotherapists with NLP specialization. Typical fees: $100 to $180 per session.
