Herbalism

Healing through medicinal plants.

PlantsAncestral medicine

Origin and history

Herbalism is the therapeutic use of medicinal plants as teas, tinctures, capsules, standardized extracts. It is the oldest form of medicine (Sumer, Egypt, China, Arab medicine, medieval Western herbalism). In Quebec, the herbalist-therapist profession is regulated by the Guild of Herbalists.

Principles and foundations

Each plant contains an array of active molecules (alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, etc.) acting synergistically on the body. Modern herbalism relies on science (study of active principles, standardized dosages) while respecting the traditional holistic approach (terrain, plant totum).

Typical session flow

First appointment: 60 to 90 minutes. The herbalist conducts a global assessment, asks about your medications, diet, symptoms. They propose a personalized formulation: tea, mother tincture, capsules, or combination. They explain the precise dosage and recommended duration.

Main indications

Immune support, digestive disorders, sleep disorders, stress, hormonal support, venous disorders, liver support, perimenopause, chronic pathology support.

Contraindications and precautions

Plants often interact with medications. Examples: St. John's wort ↔ antidepressants, ginkgo ↔ anticoagulants, licorice ↔ antihypertensives, echinacea ↔ immunosuppressants. ALWAYS inform your doctor of all plants you take. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, young children: absolute caution.

State of research

Herbalism has a solid scientific basis for many plants: St. John's wort (mild depression), valerian (insomnia), ginger (nausea), turmeric (anti-inflammatory), ginkgo (mild cognition). Other traditional uses remain less documented.

How to choose a practitioner

In Quebec, verify affiliation with the Quebec Guild of Herbalists. Prefer herbalists trained in clinical herbalism (minimum 600 hours). Typical fees: $80 to $130 for a first consultation. Avoid self-medication without assessment.
