Origin and history
Meditation has millennia-old roots in Buddhist, Hindu and Taoist traditions. Its most studied modern Western form is MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction), developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts in 1979. Today practiced by millions of people worldwide, integrated in hospitals, schools, businesses.
Principles and foundations
Meditation trains attention to observe the present moment without judgment. Different techniques: focused (breath, mantra), mindfulness (observation of sensations/thoughts), kindness (metta), guided visualization. Regular practice progressively modifies stress reactions and emotional regulation.
Typical session flow
In group or individual. A guided session lasts 30 to 60 minutes. The official MBSR program runs over 8 weeks (2h per week + 45 min daily practice). Individualized meditations with an instructor adapt to your goal (sleep, anxiety, pain, etc.).
Main indications
Chronic stress, anxiety, mild to moderate depression, sleep disorders, pain management, chronic disease support, burnout prevention, concentration improvement, oncology support.
Contraindications and precautions
Very rare. Few cases of trauma reactivation in people who have experienced serious trauma — adapted practice needed (trauma-oriented meditation). Psychotic disorders (schizophrenia) require medical advice before intensive practice.
State of research
Meditation is one of the most scientifically validated contemplative practices: proven effect on anxiety, depression, stress, chronic pain, hypertension, quality of life. MRI studies showing structural brain modifications after regular practice.
