Massage therapy

Muscle relaxation, drainage, body tension release.

TouchRecognized and reimbursed

Origin and history

Massage therapy encompasses ancient manual techniques (Swedish codified in 1812, Ayurvedic millennia-old, Japanese shiatsu, Chinese tuina, etc.). In Quebec, it is one of the most popular complementary disciplines, regulated by professional associations like FQM and RMPQ.

Principles and foundations

Massage acts on three levels: mechanical (releases muscle tension, drains lymph), neurological (activates the parasympathetic system, lowers cortisol) and emotional (soothing touch restores bodily safety). Different techniques meet different needs: Swedish (general relaxation), therapeutic (targeted pain), Californian (emotional-flowing), shiatsu (acupressure points), Thai (stretching).

Typical session flow

A session lasts 45 to 90 minutes. You undress as you are comfortable (the sheet always covers untreated areas). The massage therapist works with vegetable oils (ideally neutral if you are sensitive). Communicate your pressure preferences, zones to avoid, your pain points. A good therapist adapts in real time.

Main indications

Stress, muscle tension (back, neck, shoulders), tension headaches, sleep difficulties, sports recovery, chronic pain support (in complement). Recognized and reimbursed by most supplementary insurance plans.

Contraindications and precautions

Avoid in case of fever, skin infection at the massage site, recent phlebitis, unconsolidated fracture, first trimester of pregnancy (consult a perinatally-trained therapist). Communicate any medical issue before the session.

State of research

Massage therapy benefits from solid research for reducing musculoskeletal pain, anxiety and stress. Effects on sleep and the immune system are also documented. Recognized by many hospitals in supportive care (oncology, palliative care).

How to choose a practitioner

Verify affiliation with a recognized association (FQM, RMPQ, AMQ in Quebec). The serious minimum training is 400 hours. Typical fees: $75 to $110 for 60 min. A good therapist listens to your needs, respects your limits, never practices sexual-toned massage.
