Magnetism

Ancient Western tradition of healing by laying on of hands and energy projection.

Energy workWestern tradition

Origin and history

Therapeutic magnetism is one of the oldest hand-healing practices in the West. Codified in the 18th century by Franz Anton Mesmer ("animal magnetism"), it draws on even older traditions (healing saints, French and Quebec "secret keepers"). Today, it is a popular practice in France, Belgium and Quebec, performed outside regulated medical frameworks.

Principles and foundations

The magnetizer projects their own vital energy to the receiver to rebalance their energy field. Unlike Reiki where the practitioner serves as a channel for a "universal" energy, the magnetizer transmits what they consider their own fluid. Techniques include laying on of hands, passes at a distance from the body, sometimes silent prayer.

Typical session flow

A session lasts 30 to 60 minutes. You remain clothed, standing or lying down. The magnetizer makes slow passes over the body, without contact or with a very light touch. Some work in silence, others pray or recite personal formulas. Several spaced sessions may be recommended depending on the reason.

Main indications

Burns (the "fire cutter" is a widespread practice, sometimes used as complement in French hospital settings), eczema, shingles, joint pain, stress, anxiety, sleep disorders. To be considered as support only.

Contraindications and precautions

No physical contraindication. For serious burns, consult a doctor first — magnetism is a complement, never a substitute. Avoid magnetizers who promise to cure serious pathologies (cancer, multiple sclerosis).

State of research

Clinical studies are rare. The "fire cutter" has notable empirical recognition in France (used in some severe burn services), but without formal scientific validation. The felt effect could combine placebo, soothing, and possibly the neurological effect of reassuring touch.

How to choose a practitioner

Oral tradition: no official diploma. Ask for references, seniority, word of mouth. Typical fees: $30 to $80 per session (often less expensive than other energy disciplines). Beware of miracle promises and expensive prepaid packages.
