Kinesiology

Assessment and re-education through movement.

MovementRecognized university profession

Origin and history

In Quebec, kinesiology refers to a recognized university profession (bachelor's degree in kinesiology) focused on the assessment and prescription of adapted physical activity. In Europe and other contexts, the term sometimes refers to "applied kinesiology" (muscle testing for energy diagnosis), a very different alternative practice. These two disciplines share the same name but are not equivalent.

Principles and foundations

Clinical kinesiology assesses physical condition (strength, endurance, mobility, balance) and prescribes personalized exercise programs. It supports rehabilitation after injury, prevention in sedentary people, optimization in athletes, management of chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension) through physical activity.

Typical session flow

First assessment: 60 to 90 minutes. The kinesiologist measures your condition (posture, joint range, strength, cardiovascular test if relevant), discusses your goals and physical history. They then create a progressive program and accompany you in session or remotely.

Main indications

Post-injury rehabilitation, chronic pain management (back, joints), prevention in sedentary people, support for chronic diseases (type 2 diabetes, hypertension), return to activity after surgery or illness, weight loss or gain, sports preparation.

Contraindications and precautions

Very few. The kinesiologist adapts exercises to your condition. Inform them of any cardiovascular pathology, recent injury, pregnancy, acute pain. For complex medical cases, they work with your doctor.

State of research

Adapted physical activity is among the most solidly validated health interventions: reduced mortality, diabetes prevention, depression improvement, cancer support. Clinical kinesiology applies this science.

How to choose a practitioner

In Quebec, require a bachelor's degree in kinesiology + affiliation with the Quebec Federation of Kinesiologists (FKQ). Typical fees: $80 to $130 for an assessment. Many supplementary insurance plans cover sessions.
