Origin and history
Modern therapeutic hypnosis has two main currents: classical hypnosis (directive, inherited from Charcot and Freud) and Ericksonian hypnosis (non-directive, founded by Milton Erickson in the 1950s). The latter is today the most practiced in therapy. Not to be confused with stage hypnosis, which has no therapeutic function.
Principles and foundations
Hypnosis induces a modified state of consciousness where the analytical mind relaxes, allowing direct access to the subconscious. In this state, therapeutic suggestions can be integrated more easily. Contrary to popular belief, you remain conscious, you hear everything, you keep control, you can exit the state at any time.
Typical session flow
A session lasts 60 to 90 minutes. First appointment: initial interview to understand your goal. The hypnotherapist then guides you by voice into a state of deep relaxation, proposes mental images, suggestions adapted to your goal. You return to an ordinary state at the end and discuss the experience.
Main indications
Smoking cessation, stress and anxiety management, phobias, sleep disorders, pain management (scientifically validated), weight loss support, emotional blockages, childbirth preparation, sports or artistic performance.
Contraindications and precautions
Avoided in case of psychotic disorders (schizophrenia), severe dissociative disorders, or paranoia. To be practiced with caution after recent trauma. A responsible hypnotherapist will refuse if your situation exceeds their scope and will refer to a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist.
State of research
Hypnosis benefits from solid scientific evidence in several areas: pain management (used in dental and obstetric surgery), irritable bowel syndrome, pre-operative anxiety, smoking cessation. Recognized by the American Medical Association since 1958.
How to choose a practitioner
Prefer hypnotherapists trained in Ericksonian hypnosis (Milton Erickson Foundation, recognized schools). Be wary of one-session cure promises. Typical fees: $100 to $180 per session. A common treatment course lasts 3 to 8 sessions.
