Digipuncture

Manual acupressure on Chinese meridians, without needles.

Traditional medicineRisk-free touch

Origin and history

Digipuncture is the application of Chinese acupuncture principles by finger pressure rather than needle insertion. It draws on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Japanese shiatsu. More accessible and without risk of infection, it can be practiced by trained therapists or in self-massage.

Principles and foundations

Like acupuncture, digipuncture seeks to release the flow of Qi (vital energy) along the 12 main meridians. Stimulation by pressure on specific points balances yin-yang and the five elements. Pressures are maintained several seconds to several minutes depending on the technique.

Typical session flow

A session lasts 45 to 75 minutes. Dressed in comfortable clothes. The practitioner identifies the points to treat (by energy assessment, observation, sometimes Chinese pulse taking) then applies precise pressures with thumbs, fingers or palms. Often combined with tuina massage or lifestyle advice.

Main indications

Stress, muscle tension, headaches, digestive disorders, sleep disorders, mild chronic pain, support during detox programs, fatigue. Very suitable for people who fear needles.

Contraindications and precautions

Avoid on inflamed areas, wounds, fractures, varicose veins. Caution in case of coagulation disorders, first trimester of pregnancy (some points should be avoided), serious cardiovascular diseases.

State of research

Research on acupressure (equivalent international term) is less extensive than acupuncture but accumulating: demonstrated effectiveness for post-surgical and pregnancy nausea, relief of certain chronic pains, stress management.

How to choose a practitioner

Prefer practitioners trained in traditional Chinese medicine (ideally several years) or shiatsu. Typical fees: $60 to $100 per session.
