Origin and history
Modern breathwork groups several breathing techniques codified in the 20th century: Rebirthing (Leonard Orr, 1970s), Holotropic Breathwork (Stanislav Grof, 1970s), Transformational Breathwork (various derived schools). Inspired by ancient practices (Indian pranayama, Tibetan bellows breath, ritual hyperventilation in certain shamanic traditions).
Principles and foundations
Intensive and continuous breathing (accelerated rhythm or amplified amplitudes for 30-90 minutes) modifies blood gas balance (controlled hyperventilation), inducing modified states of consciousness where emotions, memories and insights can emerge. Considered a tool of deep release.
Typical session flow
90 to 180 minutes. Lying comfortably, often powerful and emotional music. The facilitator guides a specific breathing (e.g. connected circular: no pause between inhale and exhale). Presence of an experienced facilitator essential. Integration period after.
Main indications
Old trauma, deep emotional blockages, spiritual search, consciousness exploration, support of intense transitions.
Contraindications and precautions
SERIOUS CONTRAINDICATIONS: cardiovascular pathologies (arrhythmias, uncontrolled hypertension, aneurysms), epilepsy, glaucoma, retinal detachment, pregnancy, active psychiatric disorders (psychosis, severe depression), recent operations. Risks of tetany attacks, syncope, traumatic reactivation. NEVER practice alone.
State of research
Few rigorous clinical studies. Holotropic breathwork has been the subject of some research showing effects on depression, anxiety and quality of life. Safety strongly depends on framework and facilitator experience.
How to choose a practitioner
Prefer facilitators certified Grof Transpersonal Training (GTT) for holotropic, or equivalent recognized trainings (minimum 2 years). Require a complete medical assessment before registration. Typical fees: $100 to $250 per session, $400 to $800 for a weekend.
