Origin and history
Modern aromatherapy was codified by René-Maurice Gattefossé in 1937 in France, but the use of aromatic plants in medicine dates back to ancient Egypt and Ayurvedic medicine. Today, it is one of the most accessible complementary disciplines, but also one of the most misused due to lack of risk awareness.
Principles and foundations
Essential oils (EOs) are concentrated plant extracts obtained by steam distillation or cold pressing (citrus). They contain up to several hundred active molecules per species. The aromatherapist personalizes synergies according to your needs, route of use (inhalation, skin application, supervised ingestion), and precautions.
Typical session flow
First appointment: 60 to 90 minutes. Full assessment (health, medications, allergies, terrain). The aromatherapist composes a personalized synergy and precisely explains the mode of use, dosages, contraindications. Often combined with aromatic massage or lifestyle advice.
Main indications
Stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, immune support (benign ENT infections), muscle pain, skin problems, hormonal support, digestive support. For serious pathologies, in complement only.
Contraindications and precautions
Numerous and SERIOUS: pregnancy (most EOs are prohibited), children under 6 (very few suitable EOs), epilepsy (several neurotoxic EOs), allergies, certain hormonal pathologies. Drug interactions possible. Internal use without medical supervision is dangerous. NEVER apply pure on the skin (except very specific indications).
State of research
EOs benefit from clinical studies for certain uses: anxiolytic effect of lavender, antibacterial of tea tree, anti-inflammatory of eucalyptus. Research remains uneven across oils.
How to choose a practitioner
Prefer aromatherapists trained in a serious school (minimum 500 hours). Verify they use quality EOs (chemotype, organic, traceability). Beware of shop advice without credentials. Typical fees: $80 to $130 for a first consultation.
