Conventional medicine and alternative healing: 6 principles to combine them safely
Conventional medicine excels in acute care: diagnosing, operating, treating an infection, managing a crisis. Alternative healing excels in chronic care and terrain: accompanying, supporting the nervous system, addressing what allopathy cannot name. The two are not in competition — they are complementary. Here are 6 principles to combine them safely.
1. Systematically inform both sides. Your doctor should know you see a naturopath, and vice versa. Drug interactions between plants and pharmaceutical molecules are real (St. John's wort and antidepressants, ginkgo and anticoagulants). Transparency prevents tragedies.
2. Never stop a medication without your doctor. A practitioner who advises you to stop your foundational treatment (insulin, thyroid, hypertension, psychiatric) in favor of their approach is violating professional ethics. Walk away.
3. The "support vs treatment" rule. Energy healing, meditation, massage therapy are powerful supports. But support is not treatment. For a diagnosed pathology, the baseline treatment must remain medical.
4. Prioritize by severity. Emergency or serious illness: conventional medicine first. Chronic stress management, muscle pain, unexplained fatigue, emotional support: alternative healing is often better suited as a first line.
5. Stay critical on both sides. Conventional medicine has its zones of uncertainty (overprescription, overdiagnosis, underestimated side effects). Alternative healing too (lack of robust evidence for some disciplines, highly variable practitioner quality). Neither camp has a monopoly on truth.
6. Team up, don't compete. The ideal is to have a family doctor who knows you combine, and one or two alternative practitioners who respect the medical framework. This triangulation creates a far stronger safety net than a single provider.
The false debate between "official medicine" and "parallel medicines" hurts patients. The best results almost always come from intelligent integration — not exclusive choice. This is exactly what Horizon Soins aims to document: all paths, without hierarchy, so you can choose the combination that fits you.
